Barry Street walks the corridors of power

10th July 2015

Despite travelling on one of the hottest days this year where railway tracks were buckling under the heat, Barry Street, still managed to attend his first PACTS meeting in the Palace of Westminster on Thursday 2nd July in his capacity as Head of Claims Motor Engineers for Covea insurance and Executive Director of Thatcham.

At this meeting, the road safety priorities for 2015 were discussed. PACTS' purpose is to provide an independent advisory service for Parliamentarians on all aspects of transport safety matters, with key focuses for 2015 including;

  • Long-term vision for a safe transport system free from death and serious injury.
  • Challenging national quantitative targets for road safety.
  • Commission an independent Road Safety Management Capacity Review (RSMCR).
  • Improve knowledge and understanding of collisions and casualties in UK road transport.
  • Improve road user standards, road network safety and improve vehicle safety.
  • Adopt the Safe System (international term) approach in road safety management.
  • Promote safe travel policies and safe transport procurement policies.
  • Review emergency medical response to collisions and enhanced trauma care.

Barry explained,

"I was pleased to be able to attend my first meeting PACTS meeting in London, identifying and promoting research-based solutions to transport safety issues and pursuing them through Parliamentary access and contacts will be my prime area of interest, together with all other PACTS members."

James Reader, Covéa Insurance’s Chief Executive said:

"I'm delighted that Covéa Insurance is now being represented at such an influential group. The objective of PACTS is a very important one: to protect human life through the promotion of transport safety. Our membership of PACTS, through Barry's participation, is a recognition of the role that we, and others in the insurance industry, have to play in improving road safety and a further demonstration of the importance that we place on our responsibilities as part of the wider community."
